Canadians Palmer, Lumsden released

According to the Toronto Sun The San Francisco 49ers released veteran quarterback Jesse Palmer to make room on their summer roster for Gibran Hamdan, the NFL Europe MVP this past spring.

Palmer had fallen behind Shaun Hill for the team's No. 3 quarterback role behind starter Alex Smith and backup Trent Dilfer, and the 49ers wanted to get a look this week at the strong-armed Hamdan before Saturday's deadline for NFL teams to cut down to their final 53-man rosters.

Jesse Lumsden, a native of Burlington, Ont., was also released yesterday. Lumsden and cornerback Dimitri Patterson were both released after the Redskins signed defensive back Vernon Fox.

Lumsden, 24, signed with Washington in the off-season as a result of an agreement between the NFL and CFL that allows players in Canada entering their option year to sign NFL contracts.

Lumsden remains a strong candidate for the Redskins' practice squad should he go unsigned by Sunday, which is the final NFL roster cutdown.
