Atogwe earns starting free safety job in St. Louis; 14 Canadians earn NFL jobs

NFL teams have pared their rosters to the league mandated, season-starting 53 players. Fourteen Canadians survived the cuts and have earned jobs to start the season.

Starters

Windsor’s OJ Atogwe has won the starting free safety job with the Rams.

Nate Burleson, who was born in Calgary while his father played for the CFL Stampeders, is listed as the third receiver in Seattle.

Special Teams

On special teams, Regina native and former University of Regina punter Jon Ryan has earned the starting job with the Green Bay Packers.

Fellow punter and Kamloops, BC native Mitch Berger returns for another season in New Orleans with the Saints.

Montreal’s J.P. Darche has retained his special teams job as long snapper in Seattle

The inconsistency of Oakville kicker Mike Vanderjagt has been good news for another Canadian – Welland, Ontario’s Shaun Suisham. Suisham has stuck with the Cowboys as an insurance policy.

Pointe Claire, Quebec native J.P. Ladouceur returns as long snapper for the Dallas Cowboys.

Backups

Israel Idonije, a former CIS standout with the Manitoba Bisons, starts the season as the 2nd string left defensive end with the Chicago Bears.

Brantford’s Nick Kaczur starts the season in New England as the second string left tackle with the Patriots.

Vancouver native Rob Meier returns for another season as the 2nd string left defensive end with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Practice Roster

Windsor’s Brett Romberg (C) starts the season with the Jaguars practice squad.

Injured Reserve

Toronto’s OJ Santiago (TE) has been placed on injured reserve by the Oakland Raiders.

Windsor’s Josh Bourke (OL) has been placed on injured reserve by the Green Bay Packers.
