Canadian Future Stars
Despite a disappointing 0-5 start to the season at Eastern Michigan, Wide Receiver ERIC DESLAURIERS (Gatineau, Quebec) is compiling solid numbers for the Eagles. Deslauriers, a senior, has caught 33 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns.KEVIN CHALLENGER (Montreal, Quebec), who is another wide receiver from Canada, is also leading his Division 1-A team in receiving yards this season. Challenger has helped the Boston College Eagles to a 4-1 record with 21 receptions for 236 yards, more than any other receiver on the team. Challenger, a junior, also has two touchdowns this season.
Also in the tough Big East conference, a Canadian has helped the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to their surprising 5-0 start. JAMAL WESTERMAN (Brampton, Ontario), the 6 foot 3, 252-pound starting defensive end for the Knights, has racked up 8 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 5 QB in the first five games.
In the Big 12 conference, running back JON CORNISH (New Westminster, British Columbia) is leading the Kansas Jay Hawks in rushing with 616 yards and 3 TD on 113 attempts, and is on pace to easily pass the 1,000 yard benchmark. Cornish, a senior, has also has 126 yards receiving on 13 catches.
JABARI ARTHUR (Montreal, Quebec), once a star CEGEP quarterback who was converted to wide receiver by the Akron Zips, is now leading the team in receiving. The 6 foot 4, 224-pound junior has caught 22 passes for 321 yards and 2 TD. JERMAINE REID (Pickering, Ontario), a senior defensive lineman with the Zips, is leading the team on the defensive side of the ball. Reid has 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks for the Zips, who have a 2-3 record in the Middle America Conference (MAC).
Also in the MAC conference, two Canadians are leaving their mark on the defensive line for the 1-3 Buffalo Bulls. Junior defensive lineman JAMES JUDGES (Pickering, Ontario) has 10 tackles and 1 sack, while sophomore defensive lineman RONALD HILAIRE (Laval, Quebec) has racked up 7 tackles.
The 2-3 Central Michigan Chippewas, who also do battle in the MAC conference, have received contributions from two Canadians this season. Senior wide receiver OBED CETOUTE (Montreal, Quebec) has 8 receptions for 141 yards. Sophomore defensive back ERIC FRASER (Burnaby, British Columbia) has 8 tackles.
J.P. BEKASIAK (Windsor, Ontario), 6 foot 6, 296-pound senior defensive tackle, has recorded 16 tackles and one sack for the 2-3 MAC conference Toledo Rockets.
A former standout with Team Canada at the NFL Global Jr. Championships, KEITH SHOLOGAN (Edmonton, Alberta), has recorded 13 tackles, 1 sack and 2 QB hurries as a junior starting defensive end with the MAC conference University of Central Florida Golden Knights.
Freshman quarterback CALEB CLARK (Calgary, Alberta) has seen action in two games for the 3-1 Western Michigan Broncos this season, but has yet to complete a pass.
In the Mountain West conference, 6 foot 3, 247-pound senior linebacker AARON WAGNER (Lethbridge, AB) has 36 tackles (second most on the team) for the 3-2 Brigham Young Cougars this season.
Also in the Mountain West conference, 6 foot 3, 287-pound senior COREY MACE (Port Moody, British Columbia) is third on the Wyoming Cowboys with 28 tackles from his defensive end position this season.
The South Carolina Gamecocks have lost promising offensive tackle GURMINDER THIND (Mississauga, Ontario) for the season due to a foot injury. Fellow Canadian sophomore JUSTIN SORENSEN (Vancouver Island, British Columbia) is getting some work in a reserve role as a result.
ROLLY LUMBALA (Calgary, Alberta), a former standout running back at powerhouse St. Francis high school in Calgary, has 12 rushes for 31 yards and 2 TD in a backup/goal line role with the western Athletic Conference Idaho Vandals this season. The 6 foot 2, 241-pound running back is a junior.
The WAC conference Boise State Broncos, who feature 4 Canadians on the roster, are off to an impressive 5-0 start. ANDREW WOODRUFF (Victoria, British Columbia), a 6 foot 3, 331-pound sophomore, is starting at right tackle for the team. JON GOTT (Lethbridge, Alberta) is the backup left guard. On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker JOSH BEAN (Calgary, Alberta) has 8 tackles and senior defensive end MIKE G WILLIAMS (Lethbridge, Alberta) has 4 tackles.
