Canadians in the NCAA: Week 10

Toronto-born running back Charlie Houghton lit the offensive fireworks for Georgetown, but his impressive display came in a triple overtime losing effort as the Hoyas went down 37-34 at Marist.

Sophomore Houghton, who starred at St Michael’s High School in Toronto, where he was an All-Canada selection in 2004, led Georgetown with 27 carried for 163 yards and 4 touchdowns and also led the team with 8 receptions for 76 yards.

Last season’s Patriot League Rookie of the Year opened the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run, regained the lead at 14-7 from 10 yards out and twice tied the score with rushing touchdowns of 26 and two yards.

Jabari Arthur (Montreal, QC) is now tied for fourth among all-time receivers at Akron having made his ninth touchdown catch of the season in a 44-22 Zips loss at Bowling Green. Arthur’s haul tallied 6 receptions for 93 yards and he also carried the call twice for 4 yards. The former CEGEP quarterback is having an outstanding season, and even generating some Heisman buzz in Akron.

Wide receiver Matt Lagace (Burlington, ON) caught 2 passes for 17 yards and returned 2 punt returns for 20 yards in a 27-12 Harvard win over Columbia, while junior tight end Martin Bedard (Laval, QC) started for Connecticut as the Huskies rose to 13th place in the BSC standings by beating Rutgers 38-19. Jamaal Westerman (Brampton, ON) recorded a tackle and a tackle for a loss for the Scarlet Knights.

Also starting on winning teams were offensive lineman Andy Hunter (Toronto, ON), whose Ashland University crushed Wayne State 63-42 as his line paved the way for 471 rushing yards and 4touchdowns, and guard Andrew Woodruff (Victoria, BC) as Boise State won 42-7 against San Jose State. Steve Schmidt (North Vancouver, BC) started at tight end and caught 3 passes for 13 yards for the Aztecs.

Although the offensive stats kept piling up for Canadians playing NCAA college football, so did the losses and none was more significant than the first defeat of the year that knocked Boston College from second to eighth place in the BSC rankings. The now 8-1 Eagles went down 41-3 to Florida State as wide receiver Kevin Challenger caught 3 passes for 41 yards.

Tight end Rolly Lumbala (Calgary, AB) had a catch for 4 yards as Idaho lost 28-16 to Louisiana Tech and another end Bill McGrath (Moose Jaw, SK) caught a pass for 6 yards as Indiana State went down to Youngstown State.

Jerome Miller (Toronto, ON) was again productive in the Missouri Rolla running game with 15 carries for 50 yards to lead the team in a 73-30 loss to Tiffin. Teammate Nathan Binder (Maidstone, ON) caught 2 passes for 35 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown for his team’s last points of the game. Binder also returned 4 kickoffs for 120 yards.

South Carolina’s slide from a 7-1 record and the promise of a bowl game continued with a third straight loss as the Gamecocks went down 48-36 to Arkansas. Justin Sorensen (Vancouver Island, BC) started at offensive tackle, while Mississauga pair Gurminder Thind and Robert Pavlovic also saw action on the line.

Leading the way defensively was defensive back Eric Fraser (Burnaby, BC) of Central Michigan, who posted 6 tackles and 2 pass break ups in a 41-32 win over Kent State. Tristan Black (Toronto, ON) started at linebacker and had 5 tackles in a 63-42 Wayne State loss to Ashland, while Keith Shologan (Edmonton, AB) weighed in with 3 tackles, a quarterback hurry and 1.5 sacks as UCF won 47-13 over Marshall.

Freshman Casey Carr posted 3 tackles in a winning effort for Abeline Christian over Texas A&M Kingsville, defensive end Mike Stadnyk (Regina, SK) had a tackle and a sack as Montana triumped 34-31 against Portland State, and Mike McEachern (Calgary, AB) made 3 tackles in a 10-9 Western Illinois loss to Southern Illinois.

As Buffalo were edged out by Miami, Ronald Hilaire (Laval, QC) started at defensive tackle and made 4 tackles, while James Judges (Pickering, ON) started at defensive end and recorded one tackle. Matt Black (Toronto, ON) returned 2 kickoffs 51 yards, gained 2 yards on a punt return and had 4 tackles and a pass break up as Saginaw Valley State suffered a 21-10 loss to Grand Valley.
