Canadians Lumbala, Arthur sign NFL deals

Former Calgary high school standout Rolly Lumbala has signed a free agent contract withe the Miami Dolphins.

If the 22-year-old makes the team, he will have a chance to play in Canada's first ever NFL regular season game when the Bills take on the Dolphins December 7 at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Jabari Arthur, another Canadian who starred in the NCAA, also signed a free-agent contract on Sunday. Arthur, a former CEGEP quarterback, led the University of Akron in receiving yardage (1,171), receptions (86) and touchdowns (10) in 2007.

Lumbala and Arthur were both passed over in the National Football League draft on the weekend, but will now attend mini-camps this weekend.

Lumbala completed his four-year football career at the NCAA Division 1A University of Idaho.

"It was definitely a relief to know that somebody out there wants you and will give you an opportunity," Lumbala told the Calgary Herlad. "But I'll be at mini-camp this weekend and I could get cut this weekend. You take it all in, but you definitely have to realize that you have a lot of work ahead of you."

Lumbala can play tailback or fullback.

"I've got my opportunity; I just have to seize it and do the best I can," he told the Herald.

Jabari Arthur, another Canadian who starred in the NCAA, also signed a free-agent contract on Sunday. Arthur, a former CEGEP quarterback, led the University of Akron in receiving yardage (1,171), receptions (86) and touchdowns (10) in 2007.
