Canadians in the NCAA Week 13
By By Lok-Tin Yao
It is special to be a part of an undefeated season, but to be a part of two makes it twice as nice.
Boise State offensive lineman Andrew Woodruff (Victoria, B.C.) and Jon Gott (Lethbridge, AB) both added another undefeated (12-0) regular season to their resume. The Broncos gave Frenso State an equal mix of the pass and run in their 61-10 victory. The offense piled up 494 yards of offense and allowed no sacks in the regular season finale. Boise State running back Ian Johnson put his stamp on history as he tied Marshall Faulk’s Western Atlantic Conference career-touchdown record of 57 touchdowns.
Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan put on an offensive show for the Great Lakes State compiling 108 combined points. The Chippewas battled the entire game with a deficit. They cut the lead to 56-52 early in the fourth quarter, but all the scoring came to a halt after that. The season finale loss put Central Michigan at (8-4). Greg Wojt (Mississauga, ON) started at right tackle for the Chippewas as the team accumulated 555 total yards. Kito Poblah (Montreal, QC) snagged five passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Montana continued its hot streak into the playoffs against Texas State in a 31-13 win. Grizzlies Mike Stadnyk (Regina, SK) received the start at defensive end and contributed seven tackles, including one for a loss. The defense held the Bobcats to less than 100 yards rushing and 4 of 13 on third down conversions. Kicker Brody McKnight (Vancouver, BC) put the game well out of reach with a late fourth quarter 37-yard field goal. The freshman also converted three extra points. Montana will take on Weber State in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
New Hampshire played their first round playoff game against Southern Illinois. After trailing 13-6, the Wildcats clawed their way to a 26-13 lead in the third quarter. Wildcats corner Ryan Hinds (Toronto, ON) put the game on ice with an interception in the final seconds of the game. The North Toronto alum also recorded a pass break up and a tackle as the Salukis could only manage 169 yards through the air. The Wildcats will face third seed Northern Iowa on Saturday.
Rice faced off against Houston in the 32nd Bayou Bucket game. As the Owls have done all season, the offense took to the air. Left tackle Scott Mitchell’s (Ottawa, ON) performance allowed the offense to throw for 393 yards and five touchdowns on the Cougars. Rice would stay in control throughout the game to win, 56-42.
Houston’s loss gave Tulsa the chance to clinch the Conference-USA Western Division title and a spot in the C-USA championship game with a win. Marshall would not make it easy, answering each Golden Hurricanes touchdown with one of their own. The game remained tied until 3:42 in the fourth quarter, when Tulsa went ahead with a 22-yard field goal. They would hold on in the closing minutes to win 38-35. Left tackle Tyler Holmes (Ottawa, Ontario) started for the Golden Hurricanes, as the offense amassed 510 total yards. Tulsa will take on East Carolina for the C-USA Championship Game on Saturday.
After winning two straight overtime contests, Buffalo finished the season with a disappointing 24-21 loss to Kent State. Bulls defensive tackle Ronald Hilaire (Laval, QC) finished with two tackles, one going for a loss of yards. Fellow lineman Bruno Lapointe also saw action in the game. Buffalo will take on number 15 Ball State for the Mid-American Conference Championship on Friday.
Duke suffered a 28-20 defeat to North Carolina in their final game. Blue Devils corner Chris Rwabukamba (Windsor, ON) collected three tackles in the match-up.
