Canadian up for 2nd Super Bowl ring

Dan Federkeil's road to a second Super Bowl ring has been a long and unusual one.

Five years ago Federkeil was a defensive lineman playing university football in Canada with the Calgary Dinos. Two years later he found himself on the other side of the ball, protecting one the the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.

Passed over in the 2006 NFL draft, Federkeil received a call from the Colts to come work out as an offensive lineman. It turned out that one of the Colts executives was Cal Murphy, a former CFL executive familiar with Canadian University football.

"I'd watched him play and I'd watched tapes of him, too, and I noticed he would sometimes play in short-yardage situations (as an extra blocker for the Dinos)," Murphy told the Globe and Mail after Federkeil signed his free agent contract with the Colts. "He came off the ball better on offence than he did on defence. Even before he played in the East-West Shrine game I sent an original report to the Colts that said he should be an offensive lineman."

By 2008 Federkeil had picked up a Super Bowl ring (the Colts defeated the Bears in Super Bowl XLI in Miami) and was an essential part of the Colts line, having started games against Chicago, Minnesota and Jacksonville. He also started a 2008 playoff game against San Diego.

Currently on injured reserve with a concussion (Federkeil appeared in six games this season as reserve OT and special teamer before being placed on injured reserve with concussion on 11/22), Federkeil will be watching Super Bowl XLIV from the sidelines. If the Colts are victorious the Medicine Hat native can become the first bborn and bred Canadian with two Super Bowl rings.
