Canadian LB signs with Seahawks

Former York University Lion Ricky Foley has waited four years for a second chance in the NFL.

The 6'2, 245-pound native of Courtice, Ontario led the CFL in sacks last season with 12 and recorded 51 tackles.

After a standout season at York in 2006, Foley was given a training camp opportunity with the Baltimore Ravens, but did not make the team.

He hopes that things are different this time around with the Seahawks.

As noted by Seattle Times reporter Danny O'Neil in a recent Seahawks blog, Foley is undersized for an NFL defensive end in a 4-3 scheme, which probably explains why New England was one of the other teams after him.

"He could fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme," said O'Neil in his blog. "So what would Seattle want with him? Well, that's something we'll have to wait and see, but after hearing Pete Carroll mention the "elephant" pass-rusher position as somewhere Darryl Tapp could fit, it would seem Foley would have the same tools to be that roving pass-rusher. Will he fill that role? There's a long way between now and training camp, and Foley will turn 28 in June. He has already had one stint in the NFL. In 2006, he failed to make it to training camp with the Baltimore Ravens. Obviously, he has the speed that Seattle is interested in taking a look at him as a situational pass rusher."

Foley also competed in track and field at York, and even achieved a national ranking in shot-put.
