A Regina Ram in Colts camp
Jordan Sisco – a Regina native and former University of Regina Rams receiver – is working towards a roster spot with the Indianapolis Colts. Sisco signed with the Colts in May and is currently learning the offense - and hitting the field with Peyton Manning - at a June mini-camp.
Sisco’s agent Tim Fleiszer told the Regina Leader-Post that his client’s showing at the East-West Shrine Bowl in January (an annual NCAA all-star game for graduating players, to which two Canadians are invited each year) piqued the interest of Colts scouts.
"He had an outstanding Shrine game and a week of practice,'' Fleiszer told the Leader-Post, adding there was a chance that Sisco could have been selected in the late rounds of the NFL draft."We were able to call some draft publications so he was able to get some exposure that way as well. We also sent film to every team in the NFL.''
Sisco also worked out under Cal Murphy, the Regina-based Colts scout. That workout also helped Sisco earn a tryout with the Colts.
"He had a lot to do with what happened,'' Sisco told the Leader-Post, who had 52 receptions for 700 yards in 2009 en route to a berth on the Canada West all-star team. "He worked me out and I tested well with him. I have to tip my hat to Cal for even getting this opportunity and this look.''
Now that the 6-foot-1, 212 pound receiver (who figures to play slot back in the Colts system) has the an opportunity to achieve his NFL dream, it is all up to him to make it happen.
"There is a lot of terminology and the playbook is just crazy,'' Sisco recently told the Vancouver Sun. "You think of (Colts quarterback) Peyton Manning, who is a genius, along with (senior offensive assistant) Tom Moore putting together a playbook . . . Just learning it and doing the plays was a lot of hard work. The coaches helped me out. They told me when I was doing something right and when I was doing something wrong. I learned a lot and it was good.''
Sisco, who is one of six CIS prospects who have earned training camp opportunities in the NFL this season, was also impressed with Manning.
"He came out, introduced himself and shook the hand of every player at the mini-camp,'' said Sisco, who didn't run any routes with Manning."It's not as if we didn't know him. I thought that was pretty nice.''
Other CIS grads working out in NFL mini camps this month are OL Joel Reinders (Waterloo) wearing #67 for Cleveland; OL Kristian Matte (Concordia) wearing #61 for Houston; WR Shawn Gore (Bishop's) wearing number 19 for Green Bay; LB Croy Greenwood (Concordia) wearing #93 for the Chiefs; and OL Chima Ihekwoaba (Laurier) wearing #62 for the Lions.
