A conversation with Saints DT Hollis Thomas
By Ian Allen
During the NFL season there are many ups and downs, and you find teams with major holes to climb out of.
During that time though, you really learn a lot about you’re your team is made up of. Character and the heart and soul of a team becomes ever glaring when the losses start piling up. But I like the response of one team in particular, and that is the New Orleans Saints.
Now I am not making them into a Super Bowl team just yet, but I like the way Drew Brees corrected his early season flops, and is back in synch with his Big Ten Championship winning, Pro Bowl Quaterbacking, NFC south division winning ways, coupled with the run stopping, sack lunch having defense.
So I decided to find out what is happening in the Big Easy with the Big Man on campus, DT Hollis Thomas, and also how is he enjoying his 2nd year in New Orleans.
When talking to Hollis about the season, it sounds as if Sean Peyton is doing a good job as a head coach in making sure the players are prepared for the opponents, and also everyone feeling appreciated and respected will working.
A lot of times, the business side is pretty cut and dry, and you do get your occasional coach that does make things more personal.
“Things are pretty good in New Orleans, but the conditioning after practice…hmmm, that’s pretty rough,” said Thomas when asked about daily life as a Saint.
“I prefer New Orleans over Philly because they appreciate what I do for them, and they really showed that when they extended my contract. All you want in this business is to be appreciated.”
We went on to discuss his game day attire, and he exclaimed, “I wear a walker suit, and sometimes a full suit,…I just keep it clean.”
One other side of Hollis that I found interesting is what he does off the field. He has a cookie company, a charter school, and a distribution company called “All Star Distribution”, in which they service a lot of schools with healthy snacks other than your traditional cookies, ice creams, and cokes. That is definitely stimulating. Until next time.
Ian Allen played offensive line in the NFL for six seasons, primarily with the New York Giants. He now hosts an NFL radio program on www.colourfulradio.com, Mondays, 3:00 p.m. EST
