I want to start by sending my thoughts and prayers to Kevin Everett, the Buffalo Bills tight and his family, who sustained a serious spinal cord injury in the Bills Broncos game on Sunday. It is every player’s worst fear. I was attending the game, and it was a very scary and awful experience. As of the writing of this blog Kevin was showing some signs of voluntary movement in his arms and legs, lets hope and pray for his recovery.
On a brighter note, I would like to congratulate my former teammate Steve Tasker who was honored with his name being placed on the Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Next stop for Steve should be the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Some notes about week one:
Injuries seem to be more prevalent than ever before. The Bills lost three starters to injuries including a broken arm and a broken ankle. All around the league, the injuries were mounting. I believe the fact that players continue to get bigger and faster is a main factor. I also think, because it was the first regular season game, that there are more soft tissue injuries, due to the fact that the players aren’t used to going 60 minutes. Let’s hope we see a decrease in injuries this week.
If your team struggled on offense in week one, don’t panic yet. Offensive cohesion usually takes longer than it’s defensive counterpart. If they are still struggling after week three, then you can start looking for the (panic) button.
Interesting teams, I think Detroit may be a fun team to watch this year, they showed some good things in Sunday’s win over Oakland. I really like the veteran play of Q.B. John Kitna especially in the team’s final drive, when he went 4 of 5 for 67 yards. Some wins in Detroit are sorely needed for their long-suffering fans. I also liked the way Houston played, D.E Mario Williams was a stud and Q.B. Matt Schaub was efficient. Both teams face much stiffer competition this week, Houston at Carolina and Detroit at home against the Vikings. Let’s see if they can sustain their good play.
Well, I ended up standing up my brother in law and going to the Bills game instead of watching at his house. However, this week I will be watching at home and listening to their nonsense.. er.. I mean opinions. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Finally, I spent all day the Tuesday the 11th shooting a commercial for a local furniture store with a famous Canadian, non other than Rob Ray the retired tough guy Buffalo Sabre. I told Rob that I consider myself an honorary Canadian, because I played in a border town and I now live only 15 minutes from the border. He said to be considered for honorary status, I would have to learn how to skate. We’ll see.
