Ok, I’m a homer, I’ll admit. It sure was nice to see the Bills win their first game.

It was also good to see the whole team contribute to the victory. The big side story to the win was the play of Q.B. Trent Edwards, the Stanford rookie. I was certainly impressed. The injury to starter J.P. Losman allowed the Edwards his first NFL start; J.P.’s injury is expected to last at least thru the Dallas game. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see how the quarterback situation resolves itself after the Bills bye week. I am reserving judgment. Edwards has only played one game. The following are some off field issues that may affect Buffalo’s decision.

1. This is Losmans’ last year of his contract, and he would be due for a hefty raise if he continues as the starter.

2. Tom Donahoe, who is no longer with the team, drafted Losman.

3. Ralph Wilson, the Bills owner was involved in drafting Edwards.

Around the league, I think the big stories are the New England Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys and the San Diego Chargers. First New England, in their bid to go undefeated, these are the games to circle:

1. 10/14 at Dallas

2. 11/4 at Indy

3. 10/21 at Miami, yeah I know, their 0-4 now, but remember Miami was the last unbeaten team (1972), and they were in a similar position in 1985 when they derailed the Bears and snuffed out Chicago’s undefeated season.

Now Dallas, I like Tony Romo and their whole offense, and I really like wade Phillips, my old coach, but I am predicting a Buffalo win this coming Monday night. Terell Owens has been a model teammate so far, although I wonder what would happen if the Cowboys decided to give Romo a big raise in the next couple of weeks.

San Diego, my pick for the biggest disappointment so far this season. It is time to press the panic button in Charger land. If they lose to Denver this weekend, I say they’re done.

Detroit had a huge win over the Bears last Sunday and I love it ‘cuz their making me look smart, however my other up and comer, Houston had a big setback at Atlanta, let’s see how they respond.

Speaking of the Bears, they have an unusual habit of having one or two great seasons followed by real dogs, I think the biggest reason for that has been the inconsistent play from the quarterback position the last 7 or 8 years.

Finally, My other team the Buffalo Sabres start the season this Friday, I’m fired up. I was sad to hear the retirement of long time sabres broadcaster Jim Lorenz, but at the same time the teams hiring of Harry Neale is really exciting. Harry being paired with the best play-by-play guy in the league, Rick Jeanneret is awesome!
